Miraculously there were no serious injuries following a crash involving two buses in St Peter’s Street, St Albans.
The incident took place on Saturday afternoon, when the road was packed with shoppers visiting the Charter Market in the sunshine, but fortunately nobody was hit when an Uno bus careered across the pavement.
According to an eyewitness; “Apparently one bus, driving at speed in the direction of Harpenden, crossed onto the wrong side of the road, hitting the back of an oncoming bus and coming to rest embedded in the building next to the Cock Pub at the roundabout.
“There are no fatalities, and only one ambulance was in attendance. The police said no one was hurt.”
Herts police said: “Police were called at 4.11pm [on Saturday], following reports of a road traffic collision on St Peter’s Street in St Albans.
“Multiple vehicles were involved including a bus which collided with a building, causing structural damage.
“Emergency services attended the scene.
“Five people were checked over for minor injuries at the scene, two of which, including the bus driver, were taken to hospital as a precaution.
“Due to the structural damage to the building, St Peter’s Street will be closed between the Hatfield Road and Victoria Street junctions for the rest of today.
“Enquiries into the full circumstances of the collision are ongoing.”
It is also reported that at least four taxis were also written-off in the collision.
St Peter’s Street remained closed for much of Sunday as a result of the accident.
An Uno bus spokesperson said: “We can confirm one of our vehicles was involved in an incident on St Peter’s Street on the afternoon of Saturday, 31 May. We’re relieved to report there were no serious injuries to any members of the public or our driver.
“The safety and wellbeing of our staff and wider community will always be our utmost priority, and we are fully cooperating with Hertfordshire police as they investigate the incident. We have also launched a thorough internal investigation.”
