Did you know that St Albans boasts a successful cycle racing team which has enjoyed triumphs at national and international levels?
Formed in December 2016, Verulam Cycle Club’s racing team provides the infrastructure and team support to nurture and grow talented riders. It is now considered one of the best racing teams in the region and former rider Will Smith was signed by Tour de France winning team, ‘Team Visma Lease a Bike’ last year.
This year more than 30 riders will compete in at least six disciplines of cycle racing: road racing, track (on indoor and outdoor velodromes, time trials, cyclocross, mountain biking and gravel racing.
For 2025 and 2026 the team has announced that Megan’s restaurants are joining Verulam CC as co-lead sponsor, alongside UltimateMover.com.
Team manager, Doug Driscoll explained “Over the last eight seasons we’ve achieved a huge amount, both in terms of providing a pathway for young riders to race nationally and internationally, and creating, from a standing-start, a team that is now recognised one of the best racing teams certainly in the region.
“The partnership with Megan’s enables us to support even more aspiring young racers to compete with a comprehensive package of kit and support from the team.”
Emily Tutty, marketing manager at Megan’s, added: “Community is at the heart of all that we do here at Megan’s and we’re delighted to be able to partner with Verulam! We’re passionate about supporting our local communities, as is reflected in our goal to be the nation’s most loved neighbourhood restaurant.
“We are so excited to follow the progress of the team’s young athletes and look forward to welcoming them into Megan’s at the Old Bell to refuel with their friends and family post-race!”
A special event to celebrate the launch of the new team took place at London Road Estate Social Centre on Cell Barnes Lane on Saturday, with Eurosport commentator Jez Cox hosting the event.
