A man has died at the scene of a house fire in central St Albans.
Emergency services – including fire engines, ambulances and several police cars – were called to an address in Lower Paxton Road at around 5.05pm last night following reports of a fire.
Four fire engines, from St Albans, Garston, and Hatfield were sent to the scene, with the first there within five minutes.
Firefighters in specialist breathing equipment quickly entered the house to search for any people still inside, and one person was brought out by crews.
Firefighters worked alongside East of England Ambulance Service to give them prompt medical attention, but the man was declared deceased at the scene.
His next of kin have been informed and the fire is not being treated as suspicious. A full investigation has already begun and the fire investigation team is working with Hertfordshire Constabulary to determine the cause of the blaze.
Assistant chief fire officer Darren Cook said: “Unfortunately, last night, despite the efforts of crews, a person in St Albans died in a house fire. I’d like to send my condolences to anyone affected by this incident.”
