Green Party campaigner Juliet Voisey has won the St Peter’s ward by-election.
She becomes the third Green councillor on St Albans district council, joining Cllr Simon Grover and Cllr Matt Fisher.
The result of the by-election was: Greens 628, Liberal Democrats 537, Conservative Party 156, Labour 84.
Juliet said: “I’m overwhelmed – thank you to everyone who voted for me. I look forward to helping St Albans to be a healthier and greener city for everyone, and challenging the council to deliver on the climate emergency.”
The seat was previously occupied by Danny Clare, who was elected with 1,531 votes in 2022.
Liberal Democrat and SADC leader Cllr Chris White responded to the result: “In some ways it was a rerun of the May election although with an improved result for the Lib Dems.
“We will now need to see constructive work from Green Party councillors rather than just grandstanding and half-baked campaigns that their councillors didn’t bother to fact-check.
“The Conservatives were working hard in the election but got nowhere. They will no doubt be quite pleased with the outcome as they evidently were in May.
“There are still Lib Dem councillors in the ward and we will continue to shoulder the large casework load, both environmental and beyond.”
