Two hundred and twenty students from 11 secondary schools across the St Albans area participated in the annual Rotary Technology Tournament.
The challenge for all 55 teams was to design and construct a vehicle capable of removing debris from a pipe then to demonstrate its implementation – all within a strict time frame.
The teams were divided into three categories: Advanced (16 years +), Intermediate (15 to 16 years) and Foundation (11 to 14 years).
St Columba’s College triumphed in the Advanced competition with the winning team of Shimal Fernando, Robert King, Maco Porto and Druv Gajjar. Their model vehicle included an additional device to successfully collect the debris and take it back to base.
The Intermediate competition was won by Beaumont School’s team of Nathaniel Parsons, Will Kaloczi, Luke Shearsby and James Lancaster for their innovative design.
Heathlands School for Deaf Children was victorious in the Foundation competition with the team of Maisie Sly, Yulia Lazarenko, Arielle Mpanumpanu and Dawood Alam.
The event was organised by the Rotary Clubs of St Albans and Harpenden and sponsored by Veruth Holdings.
Trophies were presented by the Chairman of Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland, Nitesh Joshi, who thanked all participants for their inspiring entries.
