The city centre branch of Oxfam is finally reopening – five months later than originally planned.
When the Chequer Street premises closed its doors in July, the charity shop promised it would be reopening imminently at its new home in the former Moss Bros store in St Peter’s Street.
But as the months ticked by without any evidence of the shop being fitted out or signage erected, the St Albans Times asked Oxfam whether they had any intentions of reopening.
A spokesperson told us in September: “The Oxfam shop that was previously in Chequer Street will be opening soon in its new location. The bigger space will enable us to display more wonderful preloved items to help us raise valuable funds to support Oxfam’s work tackling poverty and inequality around the world.
“We are looking forward to welcoming our customers back to our new space and will have more details on the opening date soon.”
But it was only in the past few weeks that there were signs of life, as the shop was swiftly transformed into a typical Oxfam store, packed with preloved items and new gifts..
It will now be opening for business this Friday, with plenty of festive goodies on sale – including rows of Christmas jumpers.
