Social media rumours suggesting St Albans city centre is in lockdown following a knife attack are completely false.
The Daily Express even posted a story suggesting residents had reported seeing “police everywhere” following the incident, with offices shut and nobody allowed in and out following a stabbing near CEX in French Row.
But when the St Albans Times investigated in person, it was business as usual across the city and no signs of any lockdown in place.
A Herts police spokesperson confirmed: “The social media rumours of a stabbing are not correct.
“Police were called at around 10.11am today following reports of a robbery at a shop on French Row, St Albans. It is reported that a male was in possession of a knife. No injuries have been reported.
“Enquiries are continuing to trace the suspect, and residents may see an increased police presence in the area as armed officers have been deployed.
“Anyone with information is asked to call 101 or report online, quoting ISR 182 of September 2.”
