The High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, Annie Brewster, recently visited HAWA Multicultural Services’ women-only gym and fitness centre at Beaumont School.
This unique facility has been tailored to meet the needs of ethnically diverse women in the community, not only promoting health and well-being but also fostering social integration in a culturally sensitive environment.
The gym, which serves women aged 16 to 75, provides a welcoming and safe space where participants can comfortably engage in fitness activities, relax, and connect with others.
Members include three generations of one local family – grandmother, mother and daughter -who all attend the gym together, highlighting its value across all age groups.
During her visit, the High Sheriff said she was impressed by the variety of activities offered, including badminton, basketball, fitness sessions, and a full gym suite. She said how inspiring it was to hear the diverse experiences of the women who benefit from this vital community resource.
HAWA MCS director and co-founder Rushna Miah said: “It was an honour to welcome the High Sheriff to our gym. The women thoroughly enjoyed her visit and appreciated the opportunity to share their experiences with her.”
The High Sheriff added: “The theme for my year in office is ‘Sport for Good’ as I am a passionate believer in the benefits it delivers to both our physical and mental health.
“What I saw today epitomises all that is good about being active. Well done HAWA MCS on such an inspiring initiative. It was wonderful to hear the stories that have brought women to this gym.
”The service you are providing offers tremendous new health and wellbeing opportunities to women from ethnically diverse backgrounds who are all, clearly, absolutely loving it!”
