St Albans’ own Pioneer Club celebrated its biggest open day so far on Sunday, with crowds packing out the community venue throughout the afternoon and evening.
With highlights from Glastonbury and then England’s breathtaking match with Slovenia on the big screen, readings by the Ver Poets, free skatepark demos, hair braiding by Braid Maidens, balloon modelling, vintage clothing, DJ sets, henna tattoos, face-painting, live music performances, street dance demonstrations from local dance school SASA, outdoor games, arts and craft from Doodlebugs, plus plenty of food and drink options, there really was something for everyone.
CEO Danny Clare said: “We opened the doors for our summer open day last Sunday. After a few days monitoring the weather forecast, we were ecstatic to see the drizzle fizzle out in the morning and the sun break through to give us a glorious afternoon in the sunshine!
“The whole site was open for the day, and our younger visitors benefitted from free skate taster sessions from the team and dance flash mobs and coaching from our wonderful dance partner, SASA. We had face painting, henna tattoos, garden games, food, drink and ice cream, kids drawing, poetry readings from Ver Poets, live music, and of course Glastonbury on the big screen.
“The Pioneer Club is here to empower young people, somewhere you can come along and get involved, here was absolutely something engaging for everyone on site, with kids getting involved and creative and the adults having a relaxing time in the sun. The only incident was one of theft, the author’s dog stealing a pizza from the St Albans Times editor, if you’re reading this, I assume we’re forgiven.
“In all, we raised around £1,500 on the day for further development of The Pioneer Club. The day was planned and delivered by Jon Prayer, our Head of Events, supported by a team of volunteers, community partners and helpful visitors. Well done Jon, we look forward to the your next trick!
“To top off the day, we showed England vs. Slovenia to a crowd in the music venue. Another emphatic performance by England… But hopefully a couple of sparks at the end that will see them on their way to victory. If you’re feeling brave, you can join us for England vs. Switzerland on Saturday, we’re open from 3pm.”
