The first major Harpenden Local History Day proved a huge success, packing out the Eric Morecambe Centre with residents and visitors alike keen to find out more about the town’s past.

Saturday’s free family day out celebrated both the 50th anniversary of the local history society and the official opening of the new museum by High Sheriff Annie Brewster in one of her first official engagements in the role.

Visitors discovered the treasures of Harpenden’s past, explored fascinating exhibits about the town’s history, and saw a drone video revealing Harpenden’s racecourse on the Common.

Experts gave talks throughout the day on subjects like medieval Harpenden, the Plague and the Office of the High Sheriff.
