Oxfam on the move to St Peter’s Street site

One of the city centre’s charity shop stalwarts is relocating to a new home.

Oxfam, which is currently based at 11 Chequer Street, will be reopening at the site of the former Moss Bros in St Peter’s Street in July, offering a much larger premises for more stock.

The Chequer Street shop hit the headlines back in February 2016, when a fire caused by a faulty heater ripped through the third floor, destroying £15,000 worth of stock.

Men’s clothing chain Moss Bros shut up shop during the pandemic, another victim of Covid lockdown restrictions which scuppered much of its core business in the form of suit hire.

What will replace Oxfam in Chequer Street is currently unknown, but that parade of shops already has several vacant outlets in the former Copperfield and Hob Salons sites, so one would hope that there are efforts underway to revitalise this section of the road.
