A public footpath through Oaklands College closed due to an unidentified contamination from a neighbouring housing development will be reopened soon.
The North Drive and a section of the alternative woodland walk was shut in February but finally opens this week.
The college told residents in a statement: “We are pleased to let you know that following discussions between the Environmental Compliance team at SADC and the Environment Agency, the contamination on North Drive has been downgraded to Category C and therefore we are permitted to reopen the route.
“Following advice from the Countrywide Rights of Way team at HCC, the college will commence work to remove the barriers and closure notices regarding the contamination. The route will be reopened in full by the Easter holidays.”
Jim Watson, chair of Marshalswick North Residents’ Association, welcomed the news: “I will be delighted when all the routes through Oaklands College will finally have been opened again. ”These paths are vital as both commuter and as leisure routes and have been greatly missed by our local communities.
“We are so glad that continuous pressure from the local community, in particular our county councillor, John Hale, and from Marshalswick North Residents’ Association has resulted in the paths being reopened.”
