The Coupers car dealership site in Catherine Street could be replaced with a massive specialist retirement community in the very heart of St Albans city centre.
Developers McCarthy Stone are proposing to develop 42 one and two-bedroom retirement living apartments, plus six chalet bungalows, on the huge site currently occupied by the dealers.
It will include high quality communal landscaped gardens and private outdoor amenity areas, and space for 22 parking spaces and mobility scooter stores.
The company believes the development will free up local housing as older people downsize into the new community, and also provide a vital boost to local businesses, with residents expected to spend a total of £370,000 in local shops and businesses each year.
Although a planning application has yet to be submitted, McCarthy Stone has been undertaking a community consultation programme to ensure engagement with local residents.
“This consultation is to inform local people of the proposals and gather feedback which, where possible, will be used to inform the plans prior to their submission to SADC,” said the company.
A virtual exhibition is live until April 2 at www.mccarthystoneconsultation.co.uk/stalbans, with an online feedback form for residents to complete.
