Members of the Royal Family joined Commonwealth representatives, dignitaries, faith leaders and representatives of a host of community organisations at St Albans Cathedral to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Commonwealth.
The event – which was attended by Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester – focused on youth with students from the University of Hertfordshire parading all 56 Commonwealth flags before music from Tring Park School for the Performing Arts, St. Albans School and the Watford School of Music. Townsend Primary School pupils wrote and read the prayers. The Lord-Lieutenant of Herts, Robert Voss CBE CStJ, said: “The Duke of Gloucester also read one of the lessons, and I was honoured to read his Majesty The King’s Commonwealth message. Over 30 Commonwealth countries were represented by their High Commissioners or senior representatives of their High Commission, and after the service, the Commonwealth cake was cut by the Duke and Duchess. With Archbishop Angaelos of the Coptic community, as well as the Bishops of Bedford and Hertford present, and a large number of Cadets, Scouts and Guides as well as St Johns volunteers from across Hertfordshire – this was a momentous and memorable celebration.”
